Danang, RVN -- "Night shot of the Sanctuary I took one night from Repose as the two passed between Danang and the DMZ."   . . . . . Chuck Davis

Taken when we were anchored near each other in the spring of 1970, before Repose headed home for Alameda and decommissioning.  Our boats exchanged crews for visits, and both captains had scheduled "full power runs" for the next morning (so we could unofficially drag race). However, that evening (while I happened to be on deck looking at Sanctuary's lights and shooting sea snakes with my WristRocket slingshot), she lost her load. We watched as her lights went out, and she was down for several hours. The drag race was cancelled."  . . . . . Chuck Davis

"I found your site quite intriguing, since I was a patient on the Sanctuary in June 1967.  I was one of several patients with a broken jaw due to a bullet wound through the face.  I also had a stab wound and shrapnel wounds of the left thigh.   Frenchy was a part of the ship's crew and was befriended by me.  If anyone knows of his whereabout's I'd be interested.  Thank you! You guys were all terrific!!!!! " . . . . . Tom Flynn/Author/A Voice of Hope

Doug was in AMTRACs attached to 2/4, and was hit in the back by sniper fire northeast of the Cua Viet River.  His arm was cast after the sniper round "bounced" through his body and broke his arm; the bullet remains there today.  The docs didn't think he'd survive, but wife Sheila says Doug was "just too stubborn to give in . . . and remains so today!"  Doug remembers "how wonderfully he was treated by medical and ship personnel who started the healing process for both body and soul. Thanks again for your tribute to a great ship and its crew." . . . . . Sheila Frisby

The photos below do not do justice to the excellent glossy color "8 X 10's" that Gary Waters has sent me.  I scanned them to get them posted on the site, but I can't do them justice here.  If you want to purchase copies of the original photographs, taken from the Fleet Oiler USS Guadalupe (AO-32) contact Gary D. "I was aboard the Sanctuary twice in 1967 as a Marine with 2/4, 3rd Mar Div.  First time with Malaria, and second time Sept. 21, 1967, for wounds received up on the DMZ during Operation Kingfisher.  Thanks to a gallant Navy doctor and his staff I was kept alive despite amputation of my left leg to the hip.  Someday I'd liked to find that great man and say "Thanks for keeping me alive."  No words can really say what I feel, even today, so many years later.  I've included a picture here.  Maybe you can tell me how I might find that doctor?  Thanks for your help.." . . . . . I have attached a photo of the POW's from Wakayama ... Mother used to cry a lot when she looked at the pictures of the POWs. What bothered her most was the harsh treatment and the fact that so many of the men were so young . . . . Tom Smith, son of Lt. Alice Larke

"I served aboard the USS Sanctuary AH-17 from 1972 - 1975 until her decommissioning at the Philadelphia Naval Ship Yard. I was a Third Class Electrician's Mate. I played in the ship's band SHOTGUN, with Lisa, Scotty, and Tom Love. I am still playing music and have a CD released on MP3." . . . . . Charles Schwab

John Sherwin wrote, "This was from my sister. Her name was Timmie Sherwin. She was in the service in the sixties and met someone that gave her the tub and they installed it on the ship. She was one of the nurses and was, I believe, a Lieutenant."

WEBMASTER MEMORY LOSS: I received this "Finucan's Folly" pink bathtub pic months ago from a shipmate, but I can't find the original email. Please send me an email to identify yourself and your photo contribution.
